Re: helping out
Salam alaykoum sis,
Regarding a charity group that takes clothes etc, I havent come across one in Melbourne yet. If you find one, please let me know.
As for the charity, I've found that the best one is the Zakaat & Sadaqah Fund (See Here: http://aswj.com.au/zakaatfund/). They give 100% of the money to charity, and do not pay workers, as they're volunteers. Places like Human Appeal pay their staff, and so not all the money goes to the needy.
You might also want to ask them regarding the feeding of poor people.
If you would like to feed people in general, then as you know we are holding nighlty iftars, and you could contribute there if you like. (And yes it's open for non-students).
Hope that helps.

Re: helping out
Where's the 'salam'
To answer your question: You can donate to your local masjid sis ... also, even take some food there for iftaar, in shaa' Allaah. There is a great reward in feeding the fasting person, so be quick!
Also, you can sponsor an orphan sis - that's a great way to 'help out' and have the company of the Prophet (peace be upon him): Umm Sa’id bint Murra al-Fihri related from her father that the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam said, “I and the guardian of an orphan will be in the Garden like these two.” (and he sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam held his two fingers up) – Adab al-Mufrad

Re: helping out
LOL! As in 'as salaamu 'alaykum' there's rewards for you just saying that.
In r/g to the donations, i don't think the money just goes into the imam's pockets, otherwise the maasajid would not have been progressing...take preston masjid for example and how that's changed heaps, mashaa Allaah. Anyway, it's up to you to where you donate, but keep in mind that donating to a place like fixing/building a mosque is an ognoing charity which means that even if you die, the rewards continue
What a lovely religion, wal-hamdulillaah.

Excuse me I'm entitled to say anything I want..thats the benefit of living in Australia
If you were offended then I apologise but I have a right to know where the money I will potentially be donating is going to

hmmmmmmm I didn't know that... as for the mosque the reason I asked is because there have been no improvements since I started going there last year, well none that I know about anyway
I'lll keep it in mind.. how do you donate?

May Allah guide us all to that which is right. Aameen. I merrily meant by that point that one should not be suspicious in that regards, this is the imaam subhanaAllah. Please forgive me if I have offended you.
